Evart ready for trip to CC-Crystal for high school playoff game Friday

EVART — It will be a rematch in the Division 7 playoffs for the Evart Wildcats, but only at a diiferent location.

The Wildcats, 7-2, will play in a predistrict game at Carson City-Crystal, 9-0. Evart defeated CC-Crystal 16-12 at Evart in a first-round game last season.

Evart coach Pat Craven indicated he suspected ahead of time his team might get a date at CC-Crystal.

“They were one of the possibilities,” said Craven. “I was surprised to see McBain drop into the other district. When we saw that, we knew we were probably going south to Carson City. We thought there was a chance to play either Lincoln Alcona or Lake City.”

Carson City-Crystal has a new coach with Devin Pringle but Craven doesn ‘t necessarily believe that means a different look for the Eagles, who run the Wing T full house.

“It looks different but the base of it is the same,” Craven said. “They were a multiple formation Wing T team last year. The base principles of what they do continues to be the same. They have new kids like we do. We’ll have to work hard to game plan them and do our best Friday night.”

The winner of this game would play either Saugatuck or Pewamo-Westphalia Nov. 8 or 9 in the district finals.

Craven isn’t sure how the Eagles will compare to other teams he’s seen this season.

“We don’t have very much game film on them yet right now but they’ll be a physical team,” Craven said. “From what I’ve seen, they’ll be a lot like Beal City and McBain, which are both physical teams. They run a lot of T. We’re expecting to see something similar to that. We feel pretty good about our (Highland) conference, which we feel is one of the strongest ones in northern Michigan. We feel good about what we’ve learned about ourselves this year and our preparation for the playoffs.”
