Evart players enjoying 2-0 football start

EVART — Seniors Robert Young-Burge and Jamin Drake have played no small role in Evart’s 2-0 football start.

Young-Burge is a middle linebacker and plays guard on offense. He showed his defensive excellence starting with the first game against Suttons Bay.

We played really good, working together as a team,” Burge said after that game.

This is his third year on the varsity.

In those first two years, Young-Burge has continually been learning in his role.

“I’ve always been a team leader,” Young-Burge said. “This year I’m a senior so I really have to step it up.”

In his third season, he’s hoping to be “better all-around.”

Young-Burge is confident the defense can have an excellent season.

“We’re quick, strong get to the ball, hard-nosed,” he said. “We have to work as a team.”

Drake is a running back and outside linebacker.

He started as a linebacker last season and is starting both ways this year.

“We had a pretty good season last year,” he said. “We have a good chance of coming back this year and making a good run for it.”

Drake had a strong defensive season in 2012, “but I feel I can do better this year,” he said.

The opener against Suttons Bay featured a sluggish first half but a strong third and fourth quarters.

“Once we got rolling in the second half, we were doing really good,” Drake said. “We just had to get things rolling. We were struggling in the first half and going through the emotions, not following through.”

As a running back “I try to use my vision, and try to see an opening and run for green,” he said, adding that as an outside linebacker. “I contain, usually have the outside.”

For the rest of the season “I think we can make a very good run in the playoffs,” Drake said.

A win over Harrison last week gives the Wildcats a shot at a 3-0 mark at Manton this Friday.
