Evart opens football practices with midnight special

EVART — It was a perfect midnight for a football practice and the Evart Wildcats took advantage at the game field on Sunday night at the Osceola County Fairgrounds.

Coach Pat Craven said there were about 47 players at the first night of practices to open the 2016 season.

“There are a couple of kids we’re awaiting for physicals yet,” Craven said.

He’s anticipating about 23 on varsity.

“I think this is our 12th year of doing midnight madness,” Craven said. “The players enjoy it.”

Sunday’s practice went for 90 minutes.

“We’ll go right into our stuff,” Craven said. “We’ll work on individual techniques and start working on keys and group work.”

After the midnight practice, Evart players also worked out Monday morning back at their practice field south of the high school building. For the rest of the week, the Wildcats will go 4-9 p.m.

“Shoulder pads can go on Wednesday and Thursday,” Craven said. “Full gear is Friday.”

The preseason scrimmage will be featured next week followed by the season opener Aug. 26 at home against White Cloud. Evart then go on the road for road games Sept. 1 at Harrison, Sept. 9 at McBain and Sept. 16 at Manton. They are home Sept. 23 against Beal City, at Lake City Sept. 30, home with Pine River on Oct. 7, at Holton on Oct. 14 and home with Baldwin on Oct. 21.
