Evart offense explodes for Wildcats' second straight win
LAKE CITY – Evart’s football team is at .500 following a 34-21 Highland Conference win on Friday over Lake City.
Lake City led 7-0 after the first quarter, but it was 7-7 at halftime. Evart (2-2) scored 27 unanswered points in the third quarter for a 34-7 lead.
The Trojans had a 14-0 scoring advantage in the final quarter.
Brayden Cass scored in the second quarter and Reese Ransom booted the extra point. A minute into the third quarter, Donovan Balowski returned an interception 21 yards for a touchdown. With eight minutes left in the third, Hayden Simmer caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Danny Witbeck and Ransom kicked the extra point.
Minutes later, Witbeck threw a 49-yard touchdown pass from Witbeck and Ransom kicked the PAT. With 39 seconds left in the third, Witbeck had a 10-yard touchdown run and Ransom converted.
Witbeck had 11 carries for 57 yards. Cass had three receptions for 112 yards. Simmer had four catches for 91 yards. Witbeck was 10-of-18 passing for 286 yards.
On defense, Balowski had nine tackles, Bryant Calderon had 11 tackles and one interception and Kamrin Grein had nine tackles and three sacks. Witbeck had a fumble recovery and interception.
“There were a lot of penalties and it seemed like it took forever,” Evart coach Pat Craven said. “It was a slow and lethargic first half. Balowski’s pick six to start the third really ignited us. We had a nice offensive and defensive quarter that put the game out of reach. Lake City had two late scores,
“We played really well in that third quarter and I was proud of our kids.”
Evart is home on Friday against Roscommon.
Houghton Lake 56, Pine River 36
HOUGHTON LAKE – Houghton Lake (2-1) fired out to a 42-8 halftime against Pine River (1-3) on Friday and went on to record this Highland Conference win.
Pine River had a 28-12 scoring advantage in the second half.
Austin Dean had 145 yards passing and 65 yards rushing for the Bucks.
Pine River is home Friday against Lake City.
