Evart names Mills new cross country coach

EVART — Kevin Mills takes over as coach of a cross country program that produced a state runner-up finish for the boys last season

Mills recently was appointed to replace Andy Eichelberger, who resigned after last season ended.

In January, Mills was hired on at the school as a math-physics teacher. He coached middle school track for a season three years ago at Waldron. He also worked at the career center in Big Rapids about 3 1/2 years.

He ran track and cross country from seventh grade on through college. Mills ran at Sturgis High School and Spring Arbor University. He ran at the state cross finals his senior year in high school and ran indoor nationals in college for the 5K in track.

“The cross country team is very unique,” Mills said. “I really enjoyed growing up on a cross country team. It’s a team every type of person can feel like they belong. Evart has had a lot of state runners who are a big part of a team and also the runners that don’t place as high. They’re still a part of the team. This is something unique to cross country. I appreciate it that everyone feels a part of the team.

“You get some of that in track as well. “

Mills said he runs on his own as much as he can.

“I did run the Grand Rapids marathon when I graduated from college,” he said.

Mills said during the summer, he’s had runs where he invites others in the community, starting from his home, and also includes a social gathering. Many of his high school runners are included.

“I hope to have it grow and be a part of the community,” he said.

The first day of official practices is Aug. 14.
