Evart looking to end boys basketball losing streak

EVART — Evart’s boys basketball team is home on Thursday night against Marion in Highland Conference action and will attempt to break a seven-game losing streak.

The Wildcats started out the season at 3-0 but haven’t won in their last seven. That includes losses last week to Manton on Friday (65-42) and to Lake City (64-59) on Jan. 19.

Against Manton,”we played better,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said. “We were down by nine at half. Wyatt Baker didn’t play the first half. They were holding him back. He had some knee issues. They used him in the second half. They kicked it out and hit their shots. They had nine threes on us in that game. We weren’t hitting our shots.”

Danny Griffin had 17 points for Evart.

Against Lake City, “we were down by 14 in the second half,” Morgan said. “Then we were down by two at halftime.”

Evart was down by only a point in the final minute.

“We fouled them and they hit two free throws and we fouled them with 20 seconds to go,” Morgan said. “We called a play for Danny. He missed the three and we fouled them, and they hit their free throws. That Lake City game was our best game to date. We came out with a lot more fire, and enthusiasm and heart.”

Griffin had 18 points to lead Evart.

Evart plays Friday at Manistee in a makeup game.

Next Tuesday, the Wildcats play at Pine River.
