EVART — Jake Hutchinson is a 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior who is giving Evart plenty of strength and power on the line this season.

This marks Hutchinson’s second varsity season. He didn’t start in 2013 but has found himself in a No. 1 role this fall.

“It was fun, I learned a lot from good players,” he said of Evart’s 7-3 playoff season in 2013.

He’s played center in the past. Being patient is the key as he snaps to new quarterback Trevin Ladd, Hutchinson indicated. He’ll also be playing defensively.

“The offense is solid, we just don’t have a lot of numbers,” he said.

Hutchinson is also a reserve defensive end.

He’s looking to be improved from last season as a player. The line did the job for the Wildcats in a 25-3 season-opening win over White Cloud.

“We have good attitudes, so we’ll be all right,” he said, adding that “being in shape and communication and focus” will be key factors for the Wildcats to have a successful season.

Evart hits the road this week at Harrison. Then the Wildcats start a six-game stretch in the Highland Conference.

“It will be the same teams as always,” Hutchinson said, while pointing to Beal City, McBain and Pine River as among the toughest teams on the schedule.
