Evart libero confident team can keep improving

EVART — A busy schedule continues for the Evart volleyball team this week with a non-league home match Thursday against Mesick.

The Wildcats also have home matches Tuesday with Pine River and Oct. 28 with Marion in Highland Conference action. The league tournament is Nov. 1 at Manton.

Lake City defeated Evart 25-13, 25-14, 25-6 in Highland Conference action Tuesday night, Oct. 7.

After winning the first two games, the Trojans stayed hot with early leads of 5-0 and 10-3 in the third game. Emily Schultz started getting kills at the net for a 15-5 lead. Cylee Burns had four straight aces for a 20-6 lead. She later served an ace for the 25th point.

Lake City is 3-1 in the conference and 8-6 overall.

"We tried some new things tonight and it worked," Lake City coach Bridgit Ardis said. "Our hits were on tonight."

Tabby Turley led in assists for Evart, while Kristin Kullman and Loraine Foster also had strong games.

Danielle Beasley, a sophomore, has been playing a key role for the Wildcats this season as libero. It's her first varsity season.

"It's a great experience, we just need to work on a lot of things," she said after the Lake City match. "We need to work together as a team."

Beasley has not always been at libero, including in her junior varsity season, when she served as the main passer.

"I pretty much go for the ball whenever it comes," she said. "I can only  play in the back row. I love it. Sometimes I wish I could hit, but I love to pass."

The key to being a good passer, Beasley said, is to "get low and move your feet. I move my feet. Sometimes I don't get very low, but I try my hardest."

The Wildcats have been struggling for wins but Beasley has seen improvement since practices started in August.

"I've seen a lot of improvement in some of my teammates," she said, adding that when she first came up to the varsity "I felt intimidated. I still do actually. But not too much."

As the Wildcats head into the final weeks of the season, team goals are to "work better together, be a team and go for the ball, be more aggressive. I want to work on my passes and get them to Tab (Evart setter Tabby Turley), and not getting them in the net."
