Evart junior helping team with his clutch shooting

EVART  — Cody Fournier has been providing Evart with some key contributions in his first year as a varsity Wildcat basketball player.

Last week against Pine River, he had one of his better games with 10 points.

He’s a junior for the Wildcats who nearly made a resounding comeback against Pine River last week by overcoming deficits as huge as 26-4 and taking the lead late in the second half before dropping the game.

“It was aggressiveness, hitting shots,” Fournier said, adding that in the first quarter “we didn’t play defense, we didn’t get back on defense. Then we got back on defense a lot harder.”

First-quarter woes have been plaguing the Wildcats during the regular season so far.

“We have to step up on D,” Fournier said. “This was one of my better games. Against McBain, I had 10 points.”

His role is very simple: score and play defense.

Fournier said it doesn’t matter in his quality of play whether he starts or comes off the bench.

The Wildcats have been playing around .500 but showed against Pine River that they’re capable of holding their own against the best in the league.

“We have to come into the game more aggressive, start the game out better,” he said.

Playing better defense is a personal goal for Fournier. He has shown that he’s able to hurt the Wildcats with his threes.

As the season progresses, Fournier and the Wildcats hope to be playing at their best by district time.
