EVART – Evart’s softball team has finished the Highland Conference season as champions at 14-0 and is now in the postseason with hopes of more championship glory.

Junior infielder-outfielder Riley Brigham and her teammates are anxious to have a successful month of June.

It’s her first year of varsity softball she played at Evart. She was at Crossroads last season but CCA didn’t have a team.

As an outfielder, Brigham was confident in her ability to read the ball and make the catch. She’s been among the team’s top hitters. One of her most memorable hits was a walkoff singl against Pine River in the semfinals of the Reed City Crossroads Tournament. It allowed Evart to win the game 6-5 and play Ludington for the tourney title. The Wildcats also won that game.

Brigham has been hitting in the .300s for the Wildcats.

“The key,” she said, “is keeping your head down. Balance is the key,” she said.

Evart has been winning a lot of games and has a 28-5 record entering the regional tourney at Clare on Saturday. The Wildcats won the district title last weekend.

“I definitely like our team,” Brigham said. “We’re really doing very good. Hopefully we can go to the state semifinals.”

Softball is Brigham’s lone sport. She’s played it since she was eight.

“I just love it,” she said.
