Flachs
EVART -- Evart's competitive cheer team will be hosting its annual Saturday invitational this weekend, and Wildcats like Mari Flachs are eager to show spectators what the team has put together as it enters the second half of the season.
Flachs is a sophomore. It's the second year of cheer. She's been in it since the fourth grade.
"My stepmom was a coach for the middle school," Flachs said. "(Last year) it went awesome. We did really good. It was a matter of practicing, making sure everyone was here and doing what we needed to do to get better."
"A highlight was qualifying out of district to get to the regional.
"Everybody had a lot of adrenalin because we were doing so well in the first couple of rounds."
Flachs is a flyer.
"I was a base and backspot in middle school," she said.
This year's team "has a little more work to do but we can be just as good," Flachs said.
Round 1 is the best round for the team so far.
On round 3, "we have to make sure everybody is practicing at home," she said.
Evart also had a home meeting on Wednesday and placed second overall and in its division. Harrison placed first. There were 12 varsity teams at the meet.
"We made mistakes," Evart coach Marty Pattee said. "I'm not disappointed they got second. If we hadn't made mistakes you never know what the outcome might have been. We increased our score even though we made mistakes."
