Evart holds back Harrison to improve to 2-0

EVART  — Layne Nadig returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown to lead Evart past Harrison 14-6 in non-league football action on Thursday.

After a scoreless first quarter, Harrison posted six points in the second. It remained 6-0 going into the fourth with Evart (2-0) netting 14 points.

Cody Pritchard scored on a 58-yard touchdown run in the fourth for a 6-6 tie with 11:08 left in the game. Moments later, Nadig ran the fumble back 67 yards for the touchdown. Nadig also caught the pass from Trevin Ladd for the two points.

“I thought our kids really stayed with the process and stuck with the game plan,” Evart coach Pat Craven said. “We told them we knew it would be a grind it out game with two very good football teams, but to trust the process and keep grinding with the plan.”

Pritchard had 10 carries for 98 yards.

“Harrison probably ran double the amount of offensive plays we ran,” Craven said. “We just stuck with it and were able to get stops defensively. We finally popped the big play with Pritchard and stole the momentum from Harrison and from their stadium. Nadig made that big play on the fumble recovery and it was pretty silent after that.”

Nadig had 11 tackles on defense, a sack and fumble recovery for a touchdown. Karsten Allen had 17 tackles with seven solos and 10 assists. Josh Dorn had seven solos and nine assists for 16.

Danny Griffin had five tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.

“The kids finished the game with a tremendous effort,” Craven said.

The Wildcats are home on Friday to face McBain in the Highland Conference opener.

“McBain’s good, they’re 2-0,” Craven said. “They’ve played two good teams and beat Manistee and Kingsley. It will be another great matchup for our kids.”
