Evart goes 1-2 in first week

REMUS — It was a solid varsity coach debut for Chippewa Hills basketball coach CJ Blaha on Friday.

His Warrior girls basketball team (1-0) coasted past Evart (1-2) 52-12 in nonleague action.

Alexis Issette and Jorga Ray scored 10 points apiece and Payton Ethridge had eight points for the Warriors.

“I’m excited,” Blaha said. “I was a little nervous being my first game as a head coach. All in all, the girls played well. it showed the improvement from last year coming into this year.”

Chippewa Hills fired out to leads of 13-4 after the first quarter and 25-6 at halftime. Ray and Rachel Lobert both had six points in the first half for the Warriors. Mckenzie Kimball and Hannah Wetters had two points apiece for Evart in the first half.

“I thought our shooting was pretty good,” Blaha said. “I was kind of nervous about our intensity. We didn’t really show intensity this week in practice on defense. We don’t normally do man the entire game but it worked well tonight. We’re still trying to figure out our roles and who we are as a team.”

The Warriors continued to roll in the third quarter and entered the fourth with a 42-9 lead. The running clock took effect late in the game once the lead became 40 points.

Evart was coming off a 52-44 win over Forest Area on Thursday.

“I thought maybe tonight, the two games prior to this kind of caught up to us,” Evart coach Paul Higgins. “Maybe it was playing back-to-back.”

It was the second straight night Evart was playing and the third time this week.

“It comes down to effort and execution, and you have to come out and play the game,” Higgins said.

Kimball had 15 points and five rebounds in the win over Forest Area. Brooke Belleville had 13 points, three rebounds and eight steals while Wetters had 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.

“I think we had some pretty balanced scoring,” Higgins said. “Defensively, we were able to set tempo and able to get easy offense on run-outs.”
