EVART — It was an enjoyable regular-season home finale for the Evart Wildcats in a 56-34 Highland Conference girls basketball victory over Marion on Thursday.

Evart (5-15, 3-11) defeated the Eagles (0-19, 0-14) for the second time this season. Evart won the first game 48-19.

“I thought we came out with pretty good intensity,” Evart coach Paul Higgins said. “We jumped on them early. The first half, our defense really sparked our offense. We were able to execute a little bit in the first half. That helped.”

The Wildcats fired out to a 12-0 lead and were up 20-7 after the first quarter. McKenzie Kimball had a 3-pointer and six points in the first quarter to lead the Wildcat attack. Cyanna Dellar added four points. Savanah Ross hit two free throws and Kimball added a 3-pointer later in the second quarter for a 36-14 lead at the intermission.

The Wildcats fired out to a 10-0 run to open the third quarter, led by Brooke Belleville who scored a layup off her own steal.

It was 46-19, Wildcats, after the third quarter. Kaylee Ladd netted a 3-pointer early in the fourth for a 51-21 Evart lead. Sarah Nelson's free throw made it 56-34 at 1:40.

Belleville scored 13 points, followed by Dellar with 12 and Kimball with nine.

“We had good defensive stops and played as a team,” Kimball said. “We've been working on our execution and taking smart shots and working as a team.”

Kylee Sikkema had nine points for Marion, which only hit six field goals and scored 22 points on free throws.

“It was nice to give our seniors a win on the floor for one last time,” Higgins said. “That's always a good thing.”

The Wildcats ended their season with a loss at Pine River against the Bucks in a first-round district game.

Higgins indicated his team has made significant progress from November.

“I always think we left a couple (of wins) out there,” he said.
