Evart girls take pair over Glen Lake

EVART — Sam Bressler pitched a pair of complete games and the Evart softball team swept Glen Lake 5-4 and 14-7 on Wednesday in nonleague action.

The Wildcats held back the Lakers in the first game and got out to early leads in the nightcap, including an 11-4 advantage in the sixth inning. Evart added three in the top of the seventh.

Ashley Hopkins had a key double in the second game. Bressler had a double during the evening and Dani Beasley two RBIs during the doubleheader. Dani Conklin also had multiple hits.

Evart is 2-4 overall.

“We’ve seen a lot of improvement, but we still have things to work on,” Evart coach Jeff Bressler said. “There’s various individuals who need improvement on certain techniques.”

The Wildcats are confident of progressing as they get in more games, their coach indicated.

“I was proud of them,” Bressler said.

Glen Lake coach Gary Galla said his top pitcher, Jessica Penny, was out with an injury. He used Melissa Hill in the first game and Grace Daniels in the rematch.

“We were down with injuries, but we kept battling,” Galla said.

Evart plays Montabella at home Thursday.

Glen Lake 15, 10, Evart 0, 1

Evart fell to 0-3 with two losses to Glen Lake (6-0) on Wednesday. The Lakers were Division 4 state runners-up last season.

Jared Jackson went all five innings for Glen Lake in the first game while Matt Schweikart and Travis Moore shared duties in the second game.

Adam Zinger had a double in the first game for Evart, which struggled against Laker pitching.

Evart used several pitchers with Andrew Bengry starting the first game and Zinger the second.

“They’ve got a good group,” Evart coach Josh Johnson said of Glen Lake. “We have to hit better. We’re not hitting right now.”

“We need to play our game and focus more on (ourselves),” Bengry said.

Evart is at home with Montabella on Thursday.
