EVART — Sarah Nelson has enjoyed a strong season of consistently being Evart’s No. 1 runner.

Nelson, a junior, has been consistent throughout the season and has qualified for the state finals this Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. She pointed during a home race on how formidable Evart’s course at Spring Hill Camp was.

“The hills are nasty,” she said. “I don’t like hills.”

For the season, “it’s been going good. We have a full team,” she said.

Midway during the season Nelson didn’t think she had improved too much, at least not to her satisfaction.

“It’s a matter of getting everything together,” she said.

Nelson was satisfied with her first two seasons of cross country. Her personal record was 22:26 and she was at 23:28 early in the season.

“I need to work harder and pace myself,” she said.

Nelson was hoping to get in the 21s or 22s before the season would come to an end.

“I’ll try to shoot for that,” she said.

It came on Oct. 22 at Chippewa Hills when she set a new PR of 22:02.4. A week later, she was 11th at the Division 4 regionals (22:22.5).

The beginning and end of the race has been a strength for Nelson, who wanted to get better in the middle aspect of her races.

She also runs track, which is her best sport. Nelson indicated knowing what to expect running around a track seems to favor her more than going through various different types of cross country courses.
