EVART — Evart improved its record to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in the Highland Conference with a Friday night girls basketball 43-35 win over Marion.

The Wildcats were up 12-6 after the first quarter, trailed 17-15 at halftime and were down 28-24 after the third quarter. A strong fourth quarter paved the way for the Wildcats.

“We came out pretty well,” Evart coach Paul Higgins said. “The first couple of minutes of the game, we forced a lot of turnovers and were up 10-0 at one point. Then we kind of went into one of our funks where we didn’t have the effort we needed.”

Marion made a strong run before the Wildcats held firm.

“We switched things up a little bit and were able to (hit some shots) and pulled away from there,” Higgins said.

Kristin Kullman had 24 points, eight rebounds and three steals for Evart.

“There’s still a lot of room for improvement,” Higgins said. “There’s a lot of points out there.  Down the stretch, she was big for us. She started the game fast and got us off the right first. She started aggressive and she finished aggressive. That was positive there.”

Tabby Turley had seven points and five steals. Mara VanOrder contributed five points and 23 rebounds.

It was among the best rebounding games of the season for VanOrder.

“She’s also been in the 16 to 18 range,” Higgins said. “She controlled the defensive glass pretty well.”

It was the second win in a row for the Wildcats.

Evart was coming off a 46-36 win over Manton on the road Jan. 13. The Wildcats are home Thursday against McBain.
