EVART —  Evart’s girls basketball team ended its season at 3-18 with a 59-41 loss to Lake City at McBain on Monday.

Mara VanOrder led the Wildcats with 24 points. She’s one of five Evart seniors who played her final game.

Evart ended its regular season with a 60-19 loss to Pine River on Friday in Highland Conference action.

On Feb. 23, the Wildcats enjoyed a 57-31 win over Marion. Brooke Belleville led the Wildcats with 14 points.

Mara VanOrder added 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals. McKenzie Kimball scored 13 points.

“The first half was kind of sluggish for us,” Evart coach Paul Higgins said. “We did have the lead at halftime. In the third quarter, we really pulled away and started making some perimeter shots. Our press was effective. That carried into the fourth quarter. We continued to keep making shots and kept good ball pressure on them for the rest of the game.

“We shot exceptionally well from the field. We had eight 3-pointers that game. That was a bonus there.”

“Against Pine River, early on we didn’t play terrible,” Higgins said. “We couldn’t get any offense. We were playing some pretty solid defense early. We got out and ran quite a bit. They beat us in transition, especially the second quarter. That really hurt. the second half, their defense was pretty stellar and hampered us at the defensive end.”
