Evart gets revenge on McBain NMC

MCBAIN — Danny Griffin scored 19 points, while Noah Drake collected 19 points and eight rebounds and Robbie Tapling had 10 points and eight rebounds in Evart’s 63-47 Highland Conference victory over McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Thursday.

Evart (5-9, 2-7) was up 12-11 after the first quarter, 25-17 at halftime and 38-33 after the third quarter.

“It was our defense,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said. “Our defense carried us all the way through. The second quarter, we weren’t playing well offensively, but came in with a good defensive game plan and stuck with it.”

Trevin Ladd and Tapling had strong defensive efforts against two of NMC’s more talented offensive players, Morgan said.

The Wildcats lost at home to McBain NMC earlier in the season.

“We adjusted a lot since then,” Morgan said. “We (frustrated) them a lot on defense and that helps.”

Drake, Morgan said, had one of his better performances in a few games.

The Wildcats played Tuesday at Beal City and will host Manton on Friday in Highland Conference action. Evart lost to both teams earlier in the season.

“We really struggled against Beal,” Morgan recalled. “If we play like we did against NMC, we’ll have a chance against them. Manton will be tough. They’re getting to full strength. We also play them in first round of districts.”
