Evart freshman sprinter gives track team key spark

EVART — Major (Danny) Griffin was among the younger members of the Evart track team making a major contribution to the Wildcats, who won their third straight regional title and finished third at the MITCA meet this season.

As a freshman, Griffin has been in the 400 open plus the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Two of his relays qualified for the state finals May 31 at Hudsonville.

He also qualified in a fourth event. He was third in the 400-meter dash, one place out of second, which would put him in the state meet. His time was 55.16. A 55.0 has been his best time in that event.

“In the 400, I start kicking it in about halfway through,” he said.

Griffin said he's met his expectations.

At regionals May 17 in Marion, Griffin was on the 3,200 relay team that included Santana Scott, Josh Woods and Max Hodges that clocked a 8:44.96 for first place.

He was also on the 800 relay squad that was second in 1:38.37.

Griffin ran track in the seventh grade but an injury sidelined him in 2013.

Griffin is also in football and basketball but likes the conditioning he gets from track. “It helps me a lot,” he said. “I'm barely winded when I run in football and basketball too.”
