Evart freshman softball player posts memorable season

Katelyn Gostlin

EVART - Evart's softball team is coming off one of its most memorable seasons in recent history and among the factors was the performance of freshman Katelyn Gostlin.

She's played softball for many years and was able to not miss a beat even when COVID canceled the 2020 season.

"I have a travel team and a good hitting and pitching coach," Gostlin said.

When the season came, Gostlin was ready to go. The Wildcats won Highland Conference and district titles.

There was no JV team and Gostlin knew she would be playing varsity.

"I think I've exceeded my expectations a lot," she said.

Gostlin had two home runs during the Evart championship effort in the district tournament.

"The first one I was shocked it happened and the second one, it was like a dream," Gostlin laughed. "I couldn't figure out what was happening."

Her batting average was strong all season.

"The key is hitting the ball and not overdoing it," Gostlin said.

She has played first base for a long time and is a lefthander.

"I was told I'd be a good first baseman," Gostlin said.

Her arm and glove have been effective defensively.

It's been a memorable team season.

"We work really well together," Gostlin said.

"We've come together throughout the whole year as a team."

Evart's best game may have come in the district semifinal with a win over arch-rival McBain.

The defense has been solid, Gostlin added.

She also plays basketball and volleyball. Softball is her favorite since she's been playing it for so long.
