EVART — The Evart Wildcats started the 2017 football campaign in winning fashion, defeating the Fremont Packers 39-8 under Friday night lights.

Quarterback Carter Pritchard completed 10-of-14 passes for 154 yards and two passing touchdowns. Kyle Stokes had six carries for 93 yards and three touchdowns ,as well as four catches for 71 yards and a score. Billy Conklin carried the ball 14 times for 78 yards and Hunter Maxwell had three receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown.

“We saw some really good things,” Evart coach Pat Craven said. “Our kids played hard and they played fast. Kyle Stokes had a nice game and our kids blocked for him well up front. Carter Pritchard threw the ball well and made great decisions. We’ll have to be better defensively if we want to compete within our conference.”

On defense, Josh Dorn had 14 total tackles and Jericho VanScoyoc added eight while Donavin Reagan tallied a sack.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 19-0 lead at halftime and matched that intensity in the second half.

“I thought they played fast,” Craven said. “We were explosive on offense today and that’s something we looked to improve on going into this season.”

Pritchard showed a steady command of the offense under center.

“Carter is a really nice quarterback to have,” Craven said. “He’s cool under pressure and makes quick decisions. We were able to do some damage through the air today.”

Evart hosts Harrison (0-1) on Thursday in non-league action.

“They’re very big and they’re very physical,” Craven said. “We’ll have to try to match their size and strength with our speed and quickness.”
