Evart football players eager to get started

EVART - Bryant Calderon is among several area football players eager to start getting ready for football.

In a way, he has started.

Calderon, will be a junior in football, track and wrestling for the 2020-21 sports season. In football, he's entering his first varsity season and looking at playing slotback or tailback, which is what he played at the junior varsity level.

"I'm real quick on my feet and real good at cutting and all of that," Calderon said.

Injuries and health issues significantly curtailed his wrestling season.

Calderon was planning on track for the 2020 spring season. But all spring sports were cancelled because of the COVID-19 issue. He was planning on the 400-meter dash and the 4x4 relay. He had previously been in Evart track. The 400 has been his best event. As a freshman, he got a personal record of 58.72 seconds in the 400-meter run. He was also in the 200 meters with a PR of 26.39 seconds and in the 100 meters with a PR of 12.98 seconds.

Had there been a season, Calderon was looking to be quicker on his feet and cutting times down. It was definitely a downer when the season was canceled.

Since then, Calderon was idle for the first couple of weeks. "But coach was talking to us about chopping off weight, going out for runs and lifting," he said.

Evart has been having outdoor sessions for all athletes, including Calderon, to get into condition while waiting for other restrictions to be lifted. Calderon admitted he and other football athletes have been chomping at the bit to return safely and healthfully into normal routines.

Once the football season starts, Calderon likes Evart's chances.

"Hopefully we can be conference champions," Calderon said.
