Evart football coach happy with team's first week of practice

EVART — Evart’s football team heads to St. Louis on Thursday for a scrimmage as the Wildcats get closer to opening the season.

Coach Pat Craven told his players last Friday it was perhaps the best first week of practice he’s seen from any of his teams.

“I was really impressed with their effort and mental toughness and overall attitude from top to bottom,” Craven said. “I was pleased with it all and I liked the attitude of being willing to learn and being teachable.”

The scrimmage will have the Wildcats play Tawas, St. Louis and Sanford Meridian. There will be 20 plays on offense and 20 on defense against all three teams.

“It will be good to go again someone other than your own team,” Craven said. “There’s a couple of competitive positions we’re looking at and we’re trying to create our depth chart. We want to stay healthy coming out of it.

A scrimmage puts those kids in the situation where, they’re going up against other teams and it gives our kids an opportunity to see where they’re at.”

Practices resume this week and will continue next week, going into first game at home on Aug. 26 against nonleague opponent White Cloud.
