Evart first at Pine River cross country meet
LEROY — Evart’s boys cross country team won the 11-team Cecil R. Burch Invitational on Saturday.
Evart had a 33, followed by Kingsley with 47 and Pine River with 109.
Evart took the top three individual spots. David Zinger was first in 16:46 followed by Logan Hammer third in 17:22 and Max Hodges fourth in 17:34. Antonio Militello was 10th in 18:30, Ryan Tuttle 23rd in 19:44 and Brian Flachs 29th in 20:05.
For the Pine River boys, Trevor Holmes was fifth in 17:50, Caleb Elkins 11th in 18:42, Ben Ringling was 33rd in 20:12, Mitchell Kelsey 35th in 20:26, Joshua Phillips 41st in 20:34, Robert Ragatski 58th in 22:08 and Aaron Benton 59th in 22:14.
“The boys ran well,” said PR coach Ross Vrieze. “It’s neat watching three-or-five place runners run together as a tight pack. We’re hoping to drop times as the season goes on. I was satisfied with their performances. Evart is so strong this year and Kingsley has a strong team as well. I’m happy the way we did.”
Reed City had three runners, not enough for a team score. Joe Oehrli was second in 17:15, Drake Walker 37th in 20:28 and Matt McGahey 48th in 21:13.
“It was a cold meet,” said Reed City coach Brad Smith. “I’m happy with where we’re at.”
For the girls, Traverse City St. Francis was first with 44, followed by Kingsley with 50, Manton with 95, Pine River 99 and Evart 105.
Katelynne VanMourik of Evart was first in 20:59 and Devyn Powell of Pine River second in 21:40.
Also for Pine River, Gabie Gilbert was 28th in 24:49, Rachel Hartline 29th in 24:51, Jessica Stonto 30th in 24:52, Erica Loop 55th in 26:47, Zyporia Moored 60th in 27:05 and Raeanne Peterson 77th in 30:44
“It was neat to see our top four runners do well,” said Vrieze. “Gabby Gilbert typically runs No. 6 for us. She stepped up quite a bit. They did well considering our No. 2 is fighting injuries and didn’t do as well. Gabie and Jessica Stonto stepped up. We’re were a couple of points from third place. Jessica and Gabby ran personal best times.”
Also for Evart, Grace Hamilton was 10th in 23:18, Kaitlyn Parsons 41st in 25:23, Brianna Conner 42nd in 25:29, Taylor McLachlan 49th in 26:07 and Franzieska Kroenke 73rd in 30:19.
Emily McIntosh was 45th in 25:42 as Reed City’s only runner.
