Evart falls to NMC, McBain

EVART — Evart’s girls basketball team enters the winter break at 0-5 after a pair of losses last week.

The Wildcats on Friday lost 45-34 to McBain Northern Michigan Christian.

Evart lost on Dec. 15 at home to McBain 61-14. Brooke Belleville scored six points for Evart. Mara VanOrder had four points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats.

Evart Coach Paul Higgins said the Wildcats will be playing a home scrimmage during the break.

“We’re making progress,” Higgins said. “Offensively, we’ve been struggling. I figured that could be a weak part to start the year. Defensively, I’ve seen the most improvement out of that side of the ball. We’re still a long way from where we need to be. There’s been improvement every night out.”

Higgins said Belleville and VanOrder “have been playing pretty solid so far,” adding a lot of the newer players “are still trying to get the feel for the speed and tempo of varsity basketball.”

Evart resumes action on Jan. 7 at Beal City and will host Lake City on Jan. 12.
