Evart falls to Manton

EVART — Evart enjoyed a 7-6 lead over Manton in the second quarter but the Rangers came back for a 23-7 halftime lead in posting a 25-7 Highland Conference victory Friday night.

Robbie Tapling passed 58 yards to Danny Griffin and Chris Imhoff added the extra point for the one-point Evart lead.

Manton had a safety for the only points in the second half, the second safety of the game for the Rangers.

“I felt like I need to do a better job of preparing these kids on how to deal with adversity and how to keep their composure in tight situations,” Evart coach Pat Craven said. “We had a couple of situations (Friday night) where we gave them 16 points in the second quarter and allowed them to take control of the game.”

Dillon Danley had seven carries for 36 yards. Griffin caught three passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. Tapling was 6-of-10 passing for 105 yards.

“We turned the ball over six times,” Craven said. “We had some silly penalties. There were times we didn’t keep our composure well. It comes back to coaching. I have to do a better job of teaching those kids to understand how to keep their composure. They have to take better care of the ball. That lies on my shoulders.”

Chris Imhoff had 12 solo tackles and five assists. Layne Nadig added six solo tackles and three assists. Zach Parshall added a quarterback sack and Jericho VanScoyoc had an interception.

“Robbie Tapling played extremely hard,” Craven said. “He played a tough game at quarterback.”

Evart (0-2, 1-3) plays at Beal City Friday. The Aggies, a perennial state power, are defending conference champions and 4-0 overall.
