LAKE CITY -- Revenge was what the Evart Wildcats wanted but it wasn’t in the cards Friday night. Lake City, led by versatile junior quarterback Drew Marion, scored three touchdowns in the first half and two in the second to take early control and end the Wildcats’ season 48-7. Evart was hoping to avenge a 32-21 loss earlier in the season at Lake City. The Trojans had to rally to win that game. This time, they built a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Marion passed for 258 yards and two touchdowns while running for 58 yards and three more scores. Jared Hansen had 89 yards rushing for the Trojans, who gained 200 yards on the ground and 258 in the air. Evart had 167 yards passing from Jacob Fortune and 127 rushing with Austin Grein getting 87 yards. “They did what we expected them to do,” said Evart coach Pat Craven. “They just executed better than us. They deserved to win (Friday).” A key moment occurred early in the game after Evart stopped the Trojans on their first drive. A bad punt to Evart was rolling around the Trojan 37, which would have put the visitors in excellent field position. But the officials ruled that the ball hit an Evart’s player leg and Lake City got the ball. Craven argued unsuccessfully that the whistle had blown prior to the ball hitting his player. “The official blew the whistle and the ball was laying without any one in possession. Nobody’s going for the ball when the whistle blows,” Craven said. Marion drove his team down the field with Hansen’s 37-yard run putting six points on the board. The next time Lake City got the ball, Marion scored on a 2-yard run. He passed 47 yards to Ryan Vincent later in the quarter for a 21-0 lead. Evart cut it to 21-7 on a drive that ended on a 1-run scoring run by Grein, who had scampered 32 yards to the 5-yard-line earlier in the drive. “They outplayed us and made big plays,” Craven said. “We couldn’t shut down the offense.” But the Trojans had two more scoring drives in the half with Francisco scoring on a 9-yard run and Marion on a 1-yard plunge for a 35-7 halftime lead. “We came out of the gate much faster than we did the first game (against Evart),” said Lake city coach Tim Peterson. “We jumped on them and took some air out of their sails. That helped tremendously when we jumped on them in that first quarter. Then they scored but we got two quick ones and that set the tone for us. “It was real physical in the first half and continued with the physical play in the second half.” Marion scored on a 1-yard sneak in the third quarter and passed 76 yards to Francisco in the fourth. Evart ends its season at 8-3. Craven told his players after the game to be proud of their season. “It burns now but when they look back on their season they have a lot to be proud about, “Craven said. “They represented their community very well. Lake City, 10-1, advances to the regionals next week. “These kids have worked so hard for this feeling,” Peterson said. “We have worked so hard in the offseason.” “They played a nice game on both sides of the ball,” Craven said. “They’re where they’re at for a reason.”
