Evart falls at the buzzer

EVART — Evart’s boys basketball team lost at the buzzer 56-55 to McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Friday in Highland Conference action.

Danny Griffin led Evart with 23 points. Robbie Tapling had 15 points.

“We were down by 10 going into the fourth quarter,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said. “We had the ball with 30 seconds to go. Nolan VanOrder got fouled and hit two free throws. So we ended up taking the lead by one.”

With nine seconds to go, NMC called timeout and ran a play.

“They airballed a shot,” Morgan said. “One of their kids got the ball on a tip and tipped it in, right at the buzzer. Give NMC credit. They played a good game. They made some real tough shots.”

Jordan Huizenga had 23 points for NMC.

Evart played at McBain Tuesday and is home Thursday with Beal City.

Beal City’s Jordan Schneider had a team-high 23 points.

Evart drops to 3-10 overall and 2-6 in the Highland Conference. “We’ve had our good and positive games, but there’s still lots to work on,” Evart coach Paul Higgins said. “Overall, I think we’re making good gains.”

Kullman and Mara VanOrder continued to have strong seasons for Evart.

“They’ve been pretty solid,” Higgins said. “Mara has been rebounding well and our scoring is picking up a little bit. Kristin had a couple of weeks where she wasn’t playing well but she turned the page last week and played better. Overall, they’ve both been playing well all season.”

The Wildcats are home with Lake City on Friday.
