Evart distance runner looks back on strong season

EVART — Sarah Nelson is coming off a strong sophomore track and field season for Evart.

But it’s also expected to be a busy summer for the Wildcat athlete as she prepares for cross country season.

Nelson ran in various events for the Wildcats this season. She had a personal high of 12-5 ½ in the long jump at a home meet on May 17 and finished fifth.

As a track runner, she specialized in distance events. She had a 5:50.94 at the regionals in the 1,600 run and 6:09.27 at the Highland Conference meet, placing eighth in both.

Nelson also placed eighth at regional and conference meet in the 3,200 meters with times of 13:25.50 and 13:38.43.

Her final home meet was a memorable one.

“It was painful,” she said. “I worked harder (at that meet) than at any other meet I’ve had.”

The 1,600 has been her best event.

“I got a PR this year,” she said. “(Strengths) have been the first and last laps.”

Nelson indicated the 3,200 meters has been her second strongest event. with 13:10 as her PR.

It’s her second varsity season and Nelson indicated she’s improved “a little bit” from last year.

Nelson indicated she preferred track over cross country.

“In track, there’s no up and down hills,” she said.

But Nelson is planning on a busy summer to get ready for the 2016 cross country season.
