Evart distance runner confident of boys track team's chances

EVART — Zack Douglas is in his senior year with Evart’s track team and in his fourth varsity season, he’s anxious to see what the Wildcats can do.

Looking at the last three years, Douglas recalls what’s been some key personal accomplishments.

“Always giving 100 percent, motivating myself to motivate my team and dropping times, running better times,” Douglas said.

Also a cross country runner, Douglas runs the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter races for Evart.

A 5:05 has been Douglas’ best time in the 1,600-meter run. A 10:51 at the MITCA state finals last season has been his best 3,200-meter time.

Distances are expected to be strong again for Evart.

“We’re all working hard and getting in those miles,” Douglas said, “and doing what we need to get done.”

When it comes to times, Douglas wants to get under 10:30 in the 3,200-meter run.

“Nothing’s impossible. If you set your mind to it, you can do it,” Douglas said.

In the 1,600-meter run, he’s hoping for a 4:50 or better.

“I need to keep working hard, run seven days a week, get in the miles,” Douglas said, adding that his finish has been strong. “Last year, in my first meet at Harrison, I passed about five guys in the last 200 meters.”

Distance runners have been able to get miles in despite the poor weather early in the season.

“I believe we can go for a third straight MITCA state team championship,” Douglas said. “We’re all diverse. We all have our own special areas.”

Evart is home with Kingsley on Thursday and home with McBain NMC on Tuesday.
