Evart competitive cheer team starts schedule this week

EVART — The competitive cheer season starts for Evart on Saturday at the Houghton Lake Invitational.

Coach Marty Pattee’s squad will have another tournament prior to the Christmas break on Dec. 20 at Shepherd. After the break, the season resumes at Cedar Springs Jan. 10, at Farwell Jan. 17 and at Marion Jan. 21. The Evart Invitational is Jan. 28.

“We’ve been practicing for about a good three weeks,” Pattee said.

She had eight on the varsity team, featuring two seniors: Karley Gudding and Makayla Wiltse.

“I only have two that have ever competed before so we’re going to be very young,” Pattee said. “I’m looking forward to their improvement every meet. We’ll see how it goes from there. Even my seniors, other than Karley, don’t have a lot of mat experience.”

Competitive cheer consists of three rounds. Pattee isn’t sure right now which round will be her team’s strongest.

“I’m hoping Round 1, but Round 3 (is a favorite), but it depends on if we can pull it together,” she said.

Round 3 features mounts while Round 1 emphasizes on leadership cheers and two jumps and Round 2 emphasizes gymnastics skills and precisions.
