EVART -- Todd Scott returns for another year on the Evart track and field coaching staff, but he'll be officially listed as boys coach. Tara Batdorf is new and is listed as the girls coach.

Dennis Peacock, who had been the boys coach, has retired.

Scott acknowledged last week it's unlikely there will be track or any spring sport if there is no school because of the coronavirus issue. On Friday, the MHSAA canceled the spring season.

"I'm technically the boys coach, but what we were doing was dividing up the duties between the different coaches and assistants," Scott said. "Tara is working with boys and girls. The junior high coaches were helping with the high school as well. We're trying to build a complete program that would be more sustainable and each coach works in a specific area.

"We had a lot of meetings prior to the start of the season. The coaches had been meeting since Christmas. Then the monkey wrench got thrown into it. We were concentrating on the physical overall well being of the athlete. it's not just running. We were working on core type workouts, trying to build the whole body. That's coming from the college coaches who are recommending that."

Scott noted athletes "can only do so much running on their legs and their legs give out. They're really recommending the core. Kids responded to it in the week that we had and had fun with it. All the boys and girls were warming up together. That's what were trying to implement in the program."

Batdorf and Scott attended a coaches track association seminar during the winter.

"She's really receptive and has been learning a lot and is good to work with," Scott said.

Evart had 35 to 40 athletes at its first week of practice.

"Tara had a workout schedule with them," Scott said.

But for now, the coaches will have to look to next year.
