EVART -- Evart’s competitive cheer coach Marty Pattee is anxious to get her team on the mat in January and see how the Wildcats are able to perform.

The Wildcats compete in the Highland Conference.

“We mainly placed second or third in all our meets,” Pattee recalled. “We continued to improve and were handling the restrictions well. We did not place as well as we wanted at districts, coming in eighth. We didn’t have any athletes that were seniors but we did lose two due to their families moving.”

Key athletes for the Wildcats will be senior base and tumblers Abbigail Boyd, Mari Flachs and Alexis Price; sophomore flyer Annabelle Cornell; junior base Gabby Banner, Hanna Gautz and Brookelin Gipson; freshman flyer and tumbler Caroline VanAsshe; sophomore flyer and tumbler Maddie Cook; freshman backspotter Dakota Lucha; senior base Emily Beemer; junior backspotter and tumbler Lexie Keathley; senior backspotter Makayla Locker; freshman base Savanna Cooper and junior flyer Skylar Keating.

“This team has the potential to go far,” Pattee said. “I am expecting them to beat their scores from the previous meet each time. I believe that if they put their mind to it, there is no stopping them. We have set goals and are working hard every day to reach them. I think that you will see this team have strong motions, good technique and great vocals.

“We will continue to work on our jumps, gymnastics and stunting.  This team has a ton of untapped talent.”

In the Highland Conference, “I think this team has a shot for the top spot,” Pattee said. “We have several teams that may be tough but I think Beal City or Houghton Lake will push us to improve.”

It was a different preseason for Pattee and her Wildcats compared to a year ago when COVID-related restrictions forced athletes to wear masks.

“It has been great, finally getting to see their faces,” Pattee said. “Last year we always felt like we were on edge, we never knew if the next day might bring the cancellation of the season or not. This year, I think there is a more relaxed atmosphere.

“I have full faith that if this team works hard, they will go far. Watch for them to amaze you.”
