EVART — The numbers are slightly lower than previous seasons but Evart hopes to make some noise on the cross country scene this season.

Coach Kevin Mills has eight to 10 boys and five girls on his tentative roster.

Junior Mara VanOrder leads the way for the Evart girls after playing volleyball as a freshman. She played volleyball as a sophomore, but the Wildcats are looking for her to have a banner season. Clarise Clark and Stevie Dewey are returning girl runners. Brooke Belleville and Rachel Galley are also on the roster.

Santanna Scott and Josh Woods, two key runners from last season’s state qualifying team, will lead the boys, along with junior Micah Wetters, Nick Niles, Andrew Bengry, Devin Day, Colin Knapp and Jacob Quist.

“It’s kind of a fresh start,” Mills said. “I’m not making any predictions. We’ll see how it goes. We’re not as deep as we’ve been the last couple of years.”

Evart also runs at Hesperia Aug. 27, at Manton Sept. 3 and at Midland Bullock Creek Sept. 6. The first home meet is Sept. 9 with Farwell and Harrison. Another home meet is Oct. 7 with Beaverton. The Highland season ends Oct. 14 at Pine River.

Mills expects Pine River and Beal City to be tough in the Highland for the boys and Evart and Beal City for the girls. Evart boys have won five straight league titles.

Evart has home meets Sept. 19 with Farwell and Harrison, and Oct. 7 with Beaverton.
