EVART – Evart’s boys basketball team (1-1) posted its first win of the season 62-47 in its Highland Conference opener with Lake City on Friday.

Evart trailed 17-13 after the first quarter and 25-24 after the second quarter. Evart was up 43-35 after the third quarter.

Jordan Albright had 16 points for Evart while Camden Darling had 14 and Dakobe White had 12. Marcel White added nine points.

“It was a good game all the way through,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said. “Lake City was shooting pretty well in that first half. Our defense was solid all night long. They were coming tough with some big shots. They hit two threes in the second quarter and we had some mental lapses.

“In the third quarter we made some adjustment and turned the defensive intensity up a little bit and they quit hitting the shots they were hitting earlier in the game.”

Evart is at Manton on Tuesday.

Houghton Lake 57, Pine River 33

Houghton Lake had quarter leads of 15-6, 30-13 and 44-21 and outscored Pine River 13-12 in the final quarter.
“We came out very flat and dug ourselves a big hole once again, and we never recovered,” Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said. “Our primary focus will definitely be on correcting that over the next few days.”

The Bucks are 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Highland.
