EVART — Evart’s boys basketball team entered this week with a 3-1 record.

Last Thursday the Wildcats lost 54-45 to Lakeview to suffer its first setback of the season.

Jarek VanOrder scored 19 points against Lakeview, all in the second half. Preston Boyd added 17 points.

“The first half, we had 14 turnovers and 11 points,” said Evart coach Kris Morgan. “Turnovers are killing us right now.”

On Wednesday, Evart beat Vestaburg 34-28.

“It was an ugly game,” Morgan said. “We won, but they weren’t very good.”

Morgan noted that the gym is being closed starting Wednesday for the rest of the week so crews can redo the floor. Evart plays Jan. 6 at Lake City.


HARRISON — Magdalen Hyde scored 12 points while Chelsea Bengry added 10 and Kortney Dennis scored eight in leading Evart past Harrison 41-28 Monday night in nonleague girls basketball action.

Evart led 10-7 after the first quarter, 22-14 at halftime and 32-18 after the third quarter. The Wildcats were up the entire game.

Hillary Brewer scored six points for Harrison.

Evart only was 9-of-26 in free-throw shooting.

“We didn’t shoot well in free throws. That’s a lot more points there we should have had,” said Evart coach Larry Brown. “An ugly win is better than a loss.”

Evart is 4-2. On Friday at home, the Wildcats beat Lake City 45-30.It was 28-12 at halftime. Hyde had 17 points, six assists and six steals while Dennis had 14 points and nine rebounds.

“We’re happy,” Brown said. “We’d rather be 6-0 but 4-2 is a good start for us. Evart plays home on Jan. 5 against Manton.
