Evart boys fall below .500 mark

EVART  — It was a tough week for the Evart Wildcats in boys basketball action.

The Wildcats, starting with a loss Feb. 3 to Vestaburg, were 0-3 during the week and are 6-7 overall.

Last Thursday, the Wildcats lost to Beal City 74-51.

“That was kind of a strange game,” said Evart coach Kris Morgan. “They didn’t really shoot the lights out. They played well. They got a lot of their points on fast breaks, transitional type of stuff. We didn’t get back on defense enough. We didn’t play too bad, We just couldn’t quite put the ball in the basket.”

Chris Garner scored 16 points for Evart.

The Wildcats lost Feb. 4 to Manistee 56-50 at home in a non-league game. Senior Alex Bialik scored 26 points for the second straight night and also had 11 rebounds plus six assists for the Chippewas, who are 4-7.

Jared Pattee had 17 points.

“It was close to the end and they hit their free throws,” said Morgan. “They hit eight out of ten in the last quarter and 5-of-5 in the last two or three minutes. We didn’t get over that hump.”

Morgan is hoping to have a full lineup this week. He’s been missing various players in recent games due to ineligibility issues.

This week, the Wildcats are home. They faced Manton Tuesday and play Lake City Friday in Highland Conference action. They will have four games after that to close out the regular season. The districts are the week of March 3 at Beaverton.
