Evart boys basketball team will be young this season

EVART  — Evart’s boys basketball team graduated 11 seniors from a year ago and will obviously be young during the 2013-14 campaign under coach Kris Morgan.

This marks the team’s second week of practice. Morgan has three seniors, four juniors and three sophomore on his roster. Three returners are seniors Nolan VanOrder and Cody Fournier and junior Rob Tapling. Others are Andrew Bengry, Noah Drake, Eric Johnson and Andrew Maxwell.

The Wildcats will be competing in the Highland Conference with Pine River reigning as defending champs.

“We have a solid eight-man rotation, right now anyway,” Morgan said. “We’re not very tall. We’ve got to run. We’ll probably have one of the better shooting teams I’ve had. If we can run and shoot, we’ll make out for our lack of size.”

Morgan was able to work with his players during the summer.

“Pretty much they were all there, at least for part of it, some of it or most of it,” Morgan said.

The team has already had a scrimmage at Morey Courts and faced five different teams. There’s another scrimmage Dec. 2 at Coleman.

The season opens Dec. 8 at Montabella, followed by a road game Dec. 9 at Farwell and home game Dec. 11 with Central Montcalm. There’s also a home game Dec. 17 with Reed City. The Highland Conference schedule opens Jan. 6 at McBain Northern Michigan Christian. The first home game the New Year is Jan. 13 with Manistee.
