Evart boys basketball team takes 2-0 record into break
EVART — If the weather would cooperate, the Evart Wildcat boys basketball team might have a few more wins in the books.
Evart was scheduled to have four games prior to the holiday break. Two non-league games have been postponed because of the snow including last Friday’s home tilt with Northport. Another game postponed was at Boyne City Dec. 12.
No word has been issued yet on rescheduling dates.
Chris Garner scored 16 points and had eight rebounds while Jared Pattee added 15 points and six boards to lead Evart over McBain Northern Michigan Christian 54-33 Tuesday night, Dec. 17, in Highland Conference action.
The Wildcats are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.
Evart trailed 10-8 after the first quarter but was up 27-21 at halftime and 36-23 after the third quarter. Evart outscored NMC 18-10 in the fourth.
Derek Bowen and Garner had five steals apiece.
“We started off a little slow,” said Evart coach Kris Morgan. “Jacob Hopkins hurt his knee four minutes into the game. He tried to come back in the second half but couldn’t.”
The Wildcats were getting outrebounded in the first quarter but made some adjustments and were able to take care of business after that.
“We were (18-of-38) from the free-throw line,” Morgan said. “That’s better than 2-of-16 (in the season opener). But it’s still not (great).”
NMC falls to 1-2 and 0-1.
Evart’s next game is at home Jan. 6 against Manistee.
