Evart boys basketball team opens week with win over Marion

MARION — Chris Garner had 20 points and 13 rebounds while Jared Pattee added 14 points and eight assists to lead Evart over Marion 54-37 Monday night in Highland Conference boys basketball action.

Evart was up 14-2 after the first quarter, 24-20 at halftime and 37-29 after the third quarter.

“We started off strong,” said Evart coach Kris Morgan. “Our defense played well. But defensively, our energy (later on) came down. Marion hit some threes and got back in the game.

“In the third quarter, our defensive pressure forced them into turnovers.”

The game was rescheduled from Thursday.

Evart, 8-9 overall and 5-7 in the league, plays at McBain on Thursday.

The Wildcats played Beal City on Feb. 18, and lost 71-52. Garner scored 14 points.

“We didn’t have school that day and it was a blah day,” Morgan said. “They didn’t do anything too major to us but they still scored 71 points.”

Next Monday, Evart hosts Farwell in the first game of districts. The winner advances to the semifinal round March 5 at Beaverton.

It’s a very hectic schedule for the Wildcats.

“I have most of my guys back,” Morgan said. “We should be ready to go. We’ve got the numbers now. We haven’t found a main scoring threat, we’ve been struggling a bit. We’ve had good balance but not that one guy who says ‘I’m going to score.’ The key is to start getting a couple of guys to step up and lead us in scoring.”
