Evart boys basketball team healthy, ready to resume season
EVART — Evart basketball coach Kris Morgan had his players back on the practice floor last week as the Wildcats get ready to return to action.
The Wildcats will be at Beal City on Thursday in Highland Conference action and then have their next home game on Jan. 11 against league opponent Lake City.
A postponement for weather reasons of a Highland Conference game on Dec. 16 at McBain Northern left the Wildcats with only two games under their belts: 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the Highland Conference.
The emphasis has been to stay in shape and be ready to take on an 18-game regular season stretch from Thursday through March 2.
The Wildcats resume practice Monday of last week for about two hours a day during the weekday. They were off the previous week.
“We had quite a few alumni in,” Morgan said. “It was nice to get a little bit of that into it.
"The emphasis last week “was just getting back into the gym a little bit and playing a little bit more and doing a lot of conditioning,” Morgan said. “We’ve had a pretty good turnout, we’re only had one that’s been out on vacation.”
Staying healthy has been a main priority for Morgan. He lost leading scorer Danny Griffin for a huge portion of the loss to McBain.
“Danny got hit in the knee in the upper thigh in the McBain game and he’s pretty much recovered,” Morgan said. “Nick Sylvester was out for the McBain game too and he’s recovering from a high ankle sprain.”
But Morgan expects his team to be basically healthy as it resumes the season this week.
The Wildcats also have a home game on Jan. 13 with Manton, a road game on Jan 16 at Farwell and home contests on Jan. 19 with Marion, on Jan. 23 with Crossroads Charter Academy and on Jan. 27 with Pine River.
