Evart boy runners second at home invitational

EVART — Evart’s boys cross country team settled for second place on Saturday at its home invitational.

Bear Lake-Onekama won the invitational at Spring Hill Camp with 37 points, followed by Evart (45), Hesperia (46), Manton (133), Pine River (134) and Rocommon (135).

The individual winner was Arik LaFave, of Hesperia, (16:33.9). Santana Scott, of Evart, was second (17:03.6).

Also for Evart, Josh Woods was fourth (17:33.5), Nathan Woods sixth (18:11.5), Andrew Bengry 16th (19:05.6), Micah Wetters 17th (19:07.8), Alex Hamilton 18th (19:98.3) and Jacob Quist  25th (20:21.4).

“It was a good race,” Josh Woods said. “We knew we were out to beat Bear Lake and run with them. I ran with their top two runners.”

As a team, “I think we’re looking really good,” Woods said. “We have some strong freshmen this year, which helps a lot. We didn’t lose anyone last year.”

For Pine River, Derek Hartline was 13th (18:52.1), Mark Geer 22nd (19:58.7), Ira Waters 32nd (21:1.1), Sam Pentces 33rd (21:35.4), Robbie Steele 34th (21:49.4), Dominik Cousino 37th (24:01.8) and Wade Fullerton 38th (24:19.7).

“Tyler Stonto and Robbie Steele also ran personal best times on a curvy hilly course,” Pine River coach Ross Vrieze said.

Manton took first place for the girls (47 points), followed by Kingsley (52), Evart (76), Bear-Lake Onekama (92), Roscommon (122), Pine River (128) and Hesperia (169).

Bethany McNair, of Kingsley, was meet medalist (20:43.3).

Evart was led by Sarah Nelson, who was fifth (22:44.8), followed by Mara VanOrder seventh (22:50.5), Clairese Clark 13th (23:30.8), Brooke Belleville 18th (23:45.2) and Arianna Mooney 33rd (25:11.3).

“I felt I was going so slow,” Clark said. “They changed the course. There’s a huge hill in the back. It’s a very nice day, not rainy and stuff.”

For Pine River, Olivia Thompson was eighth (22:54.8), Kelsie Charles 24th (23:42.8), Hollie Bailor 30th (24:36.4), Rachel Depew 35th (26:03.3), Alexis Beebe 39th (27:24.3), Alyssa Geer 43rd (33:20.8) and Summer Jackson 44th (28:15.3).
