EVART — Evart had a second-place performance for the boys at the Montabella Invitational on Friday.

Hesperia had 38 points while Evart had 40.

David Zinger was second in 16:21, while Max Hodges was third in 16:51 and Logan Hammer fourth in 16:52. Also for Evart, Antonio Militello was 10th in 18:23, Alex Newton 21st in 19:03, Brian Flachs 23rd in 19:12 and Ryan Tuttle 30th in 19:26.

Zinger finished second down to the wire to Jeff Cherry of Hesperia.

“They both leaned into the line and they declared the other guy a winner by a nose,” said Evart coach Andy Eichelberger.

The Evart girls were sixth, led by Katelyne VonMourik sixth in 20:40, Grace Hamilton was 28th in 23;28, Brianna Connor 32nd in 24:07, Taylor McLachlan 35th in 24:14, Katie Parsons 39th in 24:54, Bridge Moore 53rd in 27:46 and Franziska Kroenke 59th in 28:47.

Pine River also ran at Montabella.

The girls were seventh out of 10 teams. Devyn Powell was ninth in 21:00 in the White Division.

Jasmine Huback was 46th in 24:39, Angela Nicholson 59th in 25:54 and Suzanna Johnson 70th in 26:53. Mariah Curtis was 74th in 27:45

The Pine River boys were also in the White Division and finished fourth. Trevor Holmes was second in 17:15 while Caleb Elkins was 20th in 18:19, Ben Rigling 42nd in 19:36 and Mitchell Kelsey 45th in 19:43.

“Overall, I was satisfied with the times,” said Pine River coach Ross Vrieze.


Reed City was at the Manistee Invitational last week. Joe Oehrli won the race in 16:53.

“He was only 15 seconds off the course record,” said Reed City coach Brad Smith. “The next closest person was only a minute away.”

Lindsey Ridderman had a season’s best of 25:01 for the Reed City girls.

“All five of my runners who ran medaled,” said Smith, referring to Oehrli, Ridderman, Emily McIntosh, Amanda Steig and Drake Walker.

This week the Coyotes are at the Chippewa Hills Invitational on Saturday.
