Evart boy runners first at Hesperia Invitational
EVART — Evart’s boys were first and the girls were second in Wednesday’s Hesperia Cross Country Invitational.
Evart scored 40 points in the boys meet to top the seven-team field. Bear Lake had 51.
The girls race was a four-team event. Lowell had 25 points, Evart 50, Wyoming Lee 75 and Shelby 83.
Santana Scott was third (18:32.76) for Evart, followed by Josh Woods fifth (18:59.64), Nathan Woods ninth (19:31.62), Austin Hamilton 14th (20:12.91) Andrew Bengry 19th (20:51.02), Micah Wetters 21st (21:13.91) and Nick Niles 40th (23:14.26).
Sarah Nelson led the Evart girls in fifth (24:42.90) while Mara VanOrder was sixth (24;43.52). Clairese Clark was 15th (26:23.78), Brooke Belleville 29th (28:03.70) and Ariana Mooney 34th (29:53.15).
Evart coach Kevin Mills noted because the course was extremely hilly, the times were noticeably higher than if the race was conducted on a more typical course.
“On both sides, there’s huge improvement from the last couple of years,” Mills said. “From the guys side, we might have the best team that Evart has seen.”
Evart has its home opener Sept. 8 at Spring Hill Camp against Farwell and Harrison.
“We have a brand new course there,” Mills said. “It’s the same place where we’ve ran the last two years. They had a grant to put in a really nice course through the woods.”
