Evart basketball team focusing on summer schedule
EVART — It’s a busy month for the Evart Wildcats boys basketball team.
The Wildcats were practicing last Thursday in the high school gym as part of their summer schedule.
Among the returning players is Cody Fournier, who said the team was covering the basics during the workouts.
“Becoming a better basketball team” is among the goals, Fournier said, adding that summer basketball “keeps you in shape,” and helps players know what coaches expect of them.
This week, the Wildcats were scheduled to be at the Cadillac shootout.
“Quite a few teams are up there,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said. “I know Pine River is up there, Lake City, quite a few.”
Morgan noted he only has a few returning players from varsity and many boys he is working with during the summer will be new to the varsity level. Fournier, Robert Tapling and Nolan VanOrder are among the returning players.
The high amount of new faces for the 2014-15 team is what makes summer even more important for the Wildcats.
“It’s important to get a good head start,” Morgan said. “I told the guys what we went through is like a regular practice, It gives them a good head start on the season. Pretty much all through June we’re having practice.”
The players Morgan works with during these sessions include incoming junior varsity and varsity players.
