Evart baseball team settles for second place

EVART — Evart’s baseball squad was hoping to clinch a share of first place in the Highland Conference last week.

But a 12-2 loss to Manton on Thursday forced the Wildcats to end the season at 11-3 in the league and share second place with the Rangers.

Evart split a home doubleheader on May 24 with Pine River. The Wildcats won the first game 7-4. Tory Lodholtz was the winning pitcher, walking six and striking out five.

Layne Nadig and Rob Tapling both had two singles and a double for Evart. Chris Imhoff had two singles and two RBIs, while Andrew Bengry had a single and an RBI.

The Wildcats lost the second game 4-1. Tapling had a double while Nadig had a single, followed by Billy Conklin with a single and a RBI. Andrew Bengry and Jericho VanScoyoc both had singles.

“That was definitely a tough loss in the second game,” Evart coach Josh Johnson said. “We had been on quite a roll and we were in the hunt to share the conference with Beal. It was a disappointing loss for sure. It’s nice to be playing meaningful games toward the end of the season.”

The Wildcats enter this week at 21-9. They were scheduled to play in a tournament at Morley Stanwood on Friday, but was rained out.

Johnson indicated earlier this week Evart might have a game or scrimmage on Tuesdays but wasn’t able to confirm it. The Wildcats play in the Division 4 district at Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart on Saturday.
