EVART — It’s going to be a busy week for the Evart baseball team, which hopes for dry weather the next several days.

Evart was scheduled to play McBain Northern Michigan Christian Tuesday, and has Lake City Wednesday and Pine River Friday. All are away doubleheaders.

“We’ll get busy in the next two weeks for sure, and then districts,” Evart coach Josh Johnson said.

The Division 4 district is May 30 at Beal City.

The Wildcat Classic, scheduled for last Saturday, was rained out. Johnson said about an inning was played before officials decided to cancel the event because of the weather. Other teams at the event were Crossroads Charter Academy, Farwell, Grayling, Merrill and Reed City.

Evart officials haven’t had much luck with the weather for the Cat Classic in previous years. It also was

rained out last season.

“The last two weekends for it would have been fine,” Johnson said. “It was a wet day last year too.”

Big Rapids improved to 6-13 with a 16-0 and 8-2 doubleheader sweep over Evart on May 6. Maverick Steffes took the win in the first game and Tim Thebo had a grand slam. Hunter Walch was the winning pitcher in the second game.

Chris Imhoff had two doubles in the second game and two RBIs for Evart.

“He’s hitting the ball real well,” Johnson said, adding that Robbie Tapling also continues to play well.

“We had a lot of errors and overall wasn’t a good game,” Imhoff said. “The guys who show up to practice do what they do. We’ve been showing a lot of improvement. It’s simple routine plays ... fielding, hitting, getting (runs) on the board.

“We’ve made a lot of improvements. People are catching the ball, making plays, hitting better.”

Imhoff has been playing either second base or catcher.

“We just have to go out there and look for the W,” Imhoff said. “We have to go out and try to win the game.”
