Evart another stop closer to cross country title

LEROY — Evart’s cross country team will host the final Highland Conference meet on Tuesday and the Wildcat boys are in the driver’s seat right for the boys title.

The Wildcats won the most recent league meet Oct. 6 at Pine River and are 2-0 in the league.

Evart had a 39, followed by McBain (51), Beal City (56), Manton (101),Pine River (129), Lake City (144) and Marion (170)

Ethan Schafer of Beal City (17:24.45) was first, while Santana Scott of Evart was second (17:48.38).

Also for Evart, Nathan Woods was fourth (18:40.42), Andrew Bengry eight (18:08.82), Josh Woods ninth (19:13.08), Alex Hamilton 16th (19:37.86), Micah Wetters 18th (19;51.60), Jacob Quist 25th (20:38.25), Nick Niles 36th (22:06.23) and Tanner Ryan 37th (22:16.47).

“The guys ran real well and got the job done,” Evart coach Kevin Mills said. ‘I was proud of them.”

David Green was 46th (23:27.51) and Noah Drake 48th (23:32.88).

“It was a lot closer,” Mill said of the team standings. “At our home course, I’ll have to doubt we’ll come home with the win.”

Pine River was led by Derek Hartline, who was 10th (19:16.40), Mark Geer 17th (19:48.20), Ira Waters 30th (21:25.07), Sam Pentces 38th (22:27.19), Robbie Steele 40th (22:39.10) and Tyler Stonto 47th (23:27.51).

“It was a one-place improvement from the first meet,” Pine River coach Ross Vrieze said.

The girls race was won by Beal City (51), followed by Manton (61), Evart (78), McBain (89), Pine River (121), Marion (131) and Lake City (153).

Evart was led by Clairese Clark in 10th (23:30.96), Sarah Nelson 11th (23:31.92), Mara VanOrder 16th (24:00.75), Brooke Belleville 18th (24:11.19) and Arianna Mooney 23rd (24:38.69).

“The girls are still doing real well,” Mills said. “We’re looking forward to the last jamboree meet and hopefully they can get their second place back.”

Pine River was led by Olivia Thompson, who was eighth (23:18.27), Kelsi Charles 13th (23:37.03), Rachel DePew 29th (25:44.94), Alexis Beebe 36th (27:25.33), Alyssa Geer 44th (29:45.11) and Gretchen Geer 46th (31:33.95).

“Rachel DePew ran within nine seconds of her seasonal best time,” Vrieze said.

Evart is at Ogemaw Heights on Saturday.
