Evart angler finding an assortment of fish

EVART —  The recent warm weather gave Evart outdoorsman Paul Higgins a good excuse to get his fishing pole out and venture to some of his favorite places.

That includes the Wellston area and Tippy Dam with the Manistee River. He was fishing for steelhead on recenty and hooked a couple of good-sized ones.

“There was nobody there, a lot of guys are fishing nights now,” Higgins said. “I caught a handful of small browns, 10-to 12-inch browns. We were up there from 8:30 to 4 p.m. We fished all day.”

Higgins was showing plenty of sun on his skin. He’s been keeping busy this summer as girls basketball coach for Evart but found the time to do some enjoyable fishing.

His basketball team was up in Manistee recently for a shootout.

Meanwhile, Higgins is looking forward to August fishing.

“When it cools off, they’ll probably start feeding more,” he said. “They get pretty stagnant when it’s warm.”
